MANOVA method for analyzing repeated measures designs: an extensive primer.

چکیده
This article teaches the multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) method for repeated measures analysis to researchers who are already familiar with regular analysis of variance (ANOVA) methods. Repeated measures designs are traditionally analyzed with mixed-model ANOVAS. However, sphericity violations markedly affect the true Type I error rates and power for the mixed-model tests. However, tests based on the MANOVA approach are free of sphericity assumptions, and with modem computing software, the MANOVA approach is straightforward to use, even for complex designs and nontraditional hypotheses. We present a general strategy for implementing the MANOVA approach within statistical computing packages, and illustrate how regular (preplanned) tests and Scheff~-type simultaneous (post hoc) tests are conducted for a variety of designs and hypotheses.

Latent growth curve modeling as an integrative approach to the analysis of change
Latent Growth Curve Models (LGCM) are discussed as a general data-analytic approach to the analysis of change. Conventional, but popular, methods of analyzing change over time, such as the paired t-test, repeated measures ANOVA, or MANOVA, have a tradition, which is quite different from the more recently developed latent growth curve models. While the former originated from the idea of variance...
متن کاملRunning head: REPEATED MEASURES Analyzing Repeated Measures Designs Using Univariate and Multivariate Methods: A Primer
The present paper presents similarities and differences between the univariate and the multivariate analysis of repeated measures designs. Both methods are illustrated by means of an example. When the data are analyzed using the univariate approach and the homogeneity assumption is violated, three correcting factors are presented. When the data are analyzed using the multivariate approach, the ...
متن کاملEvaluating Performance Improvement through Repeated Measures: A Primer for Educators Considering Univariate and Multivariate Designs
Repeated measures analysis is an important tool for educators committed to evaluating the performance of their students and courses. While evaluations can be performed using a series of t-tests, repeated measures provides practitioners and researchers a more sophisticated tool to analyze the impact of education over time or interventions that employ concurrent tests to measure a particular set ...
متن کاملHE Plots for Repeated Measures Designs
Hypothesis error (HE) plots, introduced in Friendly (2007), provide graphical methods to visualize hypothesis tests in multivariate linear models, by displaying hypothesis and error covariation as ellipsoids and providing visual representations of effect size and significance. These methods are implemented in the heplots for R (Fox, Friendly, and Monette 2009a) and SAS (Friendly 2006), and appl...
متن کاملComparison of Five Analytic Techniques for Two - Group , Pre - Post Repeated Measures Designs Using SAS ®
There has been debate regarding which method to use to analyze repeated measures continuous data when the design includes only two measurement times. Five different techniques can be applied and give similar results when there is little to no correlation between preand post-test measurements and when data at each time point are complete: 1) analysis of variance on the difference between preand ...
